Enjoy Your Summer!

Thank you to everyone who attended our July meeting! We enjoyed a fantastic Show and Tell, with several big-time ribbon winners, and Mary Reinhardt gave a great presentation on the many cool features of her Machine Quilters Business Manager software. Mary also gave an excellent class after the meeting, which got rave reviews from the students.

Our next meeting will be held on October 8th. At this meeting, we will be holding elections for several Board positions. In addition, Janet Hanson will be giving a presentation on the information contained in her two books on freehand design.

I hope you are having a great summer, now that it's finally here. (and then some! Whew! As I write this, the heat index is well over 100 degrees and it won't cool down for days. I hate to say this, but I miss winter. LOL!)

Join Us In July!

What a great spring show season we were all able to enjoy this year! Fresh new fabric colors, innovative new techniques, beautiful new threads and eye-popping, showstopping quilts all combined to create a feast for the eyes. I hope that all of you were able to get out and enjoy at least one show this year and if not, I hope that you'll make time to do so in your 2012 schedule. We can learn so much about our craft by attending shows, taking classes, and just looking at what others have created!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our July meeting, which will be held on Saturday, July 9. This will be my last meeting as your President and I look forward to thanking you for the trust which you placed in both myself and my Board.

At the meeting, in addition to our usual schedule of activities, we'll enjoy a presentation by Mary Reinhardt on her amazing Machine Quilters Business Manager computer program. Mary will also offer a class after the meeting which will show you in-depth how to get the very most out of the software. If you've not taken a class from Mary before, you're in for a treat; not only is she a truly nice gal, she's an incredibly gifted teacher who is able to break things down and explain them in a way that anyone can understand.

Here is a description of Mary's class;

"Come and see the newest developments of the Machine Quilters Business Manager. The new version was recently released and you will be able to see the improvements front and center. See how a shopping list has been integrated into the program. Tracking the quilts and all of their design elements has never been easier and more thorough. Each quilt can have multiple pricing and design elements, battings, threads, etc, giving you more freedom within the program. Also, multiple payments can now be entered so cash flow is easier to follow. The invoice has been improved allowing you to set the fonts (Yeah!). With the small class format there will be plenty of time for questions and brainstorming ideas. Working with such creative people, I always learn something new in each class, so come and learn from each other!"

SATURDAY, JULY 9TH, 2011, 1:00-4:00 PM
COST: $25.00

If you would like to sign up for this class, contact Teddy Wuertz (Program Chairperson) at: to register. Please make out a check to UMMQ for $25.00 and mail to: Teddy Wuertz, 17830 N. Diamond Lake Rd., Dayton, MN 55327

I hope to see you in July!

Show Season Is Here!

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. Show season is upon us and as usual I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get caught up during breaks between shows.

Our next UMMQ meeting will be held on July 9 and will feature Mary Reinhardt of Eureka Documentation, who will teach us all of the ins and outs of using her wildly popular Machine Quilters Business Manager program. Mary has been a speaker at our guild in the past and her great sense of humor and snappy presentation skills made her a huge hit with everyone. We are *very* happy that she has agreed to make another appearance!

I hope that everyone is enjoying our long awaited spring weather. Winter is (finally!) gone, the daffodils are up, the robins have returned and the swallows are back in force, yelling at the top of their lungs in the birdhouse outside of my bedroom window. Every morning when they wake me up at the crack of dawn, I remind myself that they bring spring with them so I really shouldn't shoot them. So far it's working.

Happy Spring!

A Great Meeting!

Thanks to everyone who attended our January 8 meeting. We had a good turnout considering the very cold day, ate a huge variety of delicious food brought by our members, had a number of updates on guild business and had a fabulous show and tell! All in all; a fun day and a very productive meeting.

Our next meeting will be held on March 12, 2011 at 11:00 am and will feature a trunk show by award winning quilter and teacher, Mary Nordeng. Following the meeting will be the debut of Mary's new national show level class on embellishment. **This class is for registered students only.** Registration information will be available soon so keep an eye on your mailbox for more information about this event!

A Change For The January Meeting

There's been a change of plan for our January 8th meeting!

Following the potluck meal and the regular meeting, Mary Reinhardt will be presenting valuable information on maintaining flexibility and strength in our neck, shoulders and arms. This promises to be an enlightening presentation that could help many of us as we work on our longarm machines.

Mary may be familiar to many of you as the owner of Eureka Documentation, and as the developer of the Machine Quilters Business Manager, The Quilt Show Manager, and The Organized Quilter. What you may not know about Mary is that she is also a skilled and experienced hand therapist and is quite knowledgable about the physical challneges quilters can face.

Mary Reinhardt, OTR/L, CHT is a graduate of the University of Kansas (class of 1977) and has beena Certified Hand Therapist since 1991. Early in her career she practiced at Milliken Hand Center and The Orthopedic Center for Upper Extremity Care, Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. She has been a member of theFairview Hand Center team since 1990 and supervisor of the Burnsville clinic since 2001.

"Today we will review anatomy of the Shoulder, Arm and wrist, identifying the areas where problems can occur. Then we will learn a few effective stretches that can be done at the quilting machine to stretch, strenghten and keep you moving. Learn when it is time to seek professional help and what you can do on your own to improve your arm's health and well being."

Mark Your Calenders Now!

Thank you to all of the members who attended the October meeting! Patti Marin showed us how to sign up for and use our guild's Yahoo group, which is a wonderful resource that allows us to easily share information amongst ourselves, we had our annual Quilter's Garage Sale, which allows us to easily dump unwanted stuff on unsuspecting fellow guild members, and Carol Wilder taught an excellent Featherweight Maintenance class after the meeting so those of us with Featherweights now have no excuse for not properly caring for our machines.

Our meeting dates for 2011 have now been set; meetings will be held on January 8th (remember that this is the meeting where we all bring potluck lunch items!), March 12th (where Mary Nordeng will be teaching her fantastic class on surface embellishment. (you'll want to sign up for this one early, as it will fill f-a-s-t!), July 9th (where we will be holding the 2011 annual Quilter's Garage Sale), and October 8th.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all in 2011!
